What is the difference between gloss, matt and luster photo paper?

Gloss has a shiny surface that makes colours pop and detail look sharp, but it shows fingerprints and glare. Matt has no shine, so it avoids reflections and is easier to handle, with slightly softer colour. Luster, also called satin or semi-gloss, sits between the two with a subtle sheen that many photographers prefer for a professional look.

Does the gsm weight matter?

Yes. The gsm is the paper's weight and thickness. Everyday photo paper around 102 to 170gsm is fine for quick prints, while 200 to 275gsm feels like a proper photograph and stands up better to handling and framing. Heavier stock costs more but looks and feels more premium.

Will photo paper work in my printer?

Most photo paper here is made for inkjet printers, which is what the vast majority of home and office photo printing uses. Check your printer is an inkjet and select the matching paper type in the print settings for the best result. Laser printers need laser-rated stock, not inkjet photo paper.

What is the difference between inkjet photo paper and a Canon Selphy kit?

Inkjet photo paper is loose sheets you feed through an inkjet printer. A Canon Selphy kit is paper plus a dye-sublimation ink ribbon for a Canon Selphy compact printer, which prints smudge-proof, water-resistant photos. They are different systems, so buy the Selphy kit only if you have a Selphy printer.

What size photo paper should I buy?

6 by 4 inch is the standard snapshot size and the cheapest per print. 5 by 7 and A4 suit larger prints and portfolios, while A3 and A2 are for posters and display. Match the size to your printer's capacity and what you intend to print.

The finish sets the look. Gloss gives the sharpest, most vivid prints with a shine, the classic choice for snapshots. Matt avoids glare and hides fingerprints, good for prints handled often or shown under lights. Luster and semi-gloss sit between the two with a subtle sheen many photographers prefer.

Then the weight and size. Heavier stock from around 200 up to 275gsm feels like a real photo, while everyday 102 to 170gsm suits quick prints. Sizes run from 6 by 4 inch and 5 by 7 up to A4, A3 and A2. Most is for inkjet printers, with separate dye-sublimation kits for Canon Selphy machines.
