A utility knife is only as good as the blade in it, and the blade you need depends on the job. Start with width: 9mm for trimming and craft, 18mm for everyday boxes and packaging, 25mm for thick card, carpet and repeated carton work. Then decide how it locks and whether you need a safety knife that pulls the blade back on its own. We stock Tajima, Fiskars, Scotch, Keen and Celco, and the matching replacement blades for all of them.

For most box and packaging work an 18mm snap-off utility knife is the right call. Drop to 9mm for light trimming and craft, and go up to 25mm for thick card, carpet or repeated heavy cartons.

The blade is scored into segments. When the tip goes dull you snap off the front segment with pliers or the snapper built into the cap, which exposes a fresh sharp edge. One blade lasts through several segments before you replace it.

Match the code, not just the width. 9mm knives take LCB30, 18mm take LCB50 and 25mm take LCB65. Safety knives like the Tajima LC959 use their own CB-series blades. The code is on the original blade pack or stamped on the knife.

An auto-retract knife exposes the blade only while you hold the slider, then snaps it back inside when you let go. A concealed knife never exposes the edge at all; the blade sits hidden in a guide and cuts the carton from the inside. Concealed is the safest around product, auto-retract is more versatile for general cutting.

Start with the blade width

9mm: the small one. Light trimming, craft work, opening packaging without burying the blade.

18mm: the standard box cutter. Cartons, packaging and general office cutting. This is the one most people want.

25mm: heavy duty. Thick card, carpet, underlay and high-volume carton work where a thinner blade would flex.

Safety knives: auto-retract or concealed blade for dispatch and warehouse areas with health and safety rules.

Once you've picked the knife, grab the replacement blades that fit it. The code on the pack has to match the knife.

Snap-off utility knives: which width

Snap-off blades keep a sharp edge without sharpening. When the tip dulls you snap off a segment with pliers or the snapper on the cap, and you're cutting clean again. The width sets what the knife can handle:

  • 9mm light duty. Trimming paper and film, craft and hobby work, scoring, opening soft packaging.
  • 18mm general duty. The everyday box cutter for cartons, strapping and packaging. The most common size in any office or stockroom.
  • 25mm heavy duty. Thick card, multi-wall cartons, carpet and underlay, and any job where you lean on the blade.

How the blade locks

The locking mechanism decides how far the blade extends and how firmly it stays put:

  • Slide lock (Tajima LC series). Push the slider up, it ratchets and holds. Quick to extend, easy one-handed use.
  • Screw lock (Tajima DC and LC501). A thumbwheel clamps the blade solid with no wobble. Best for heavy or precise cuts.
  • Auto lock (Celco, Keen). The blade locks at each notch on its own as you slide it out.

Safety knives for dispatch and warehouse

If knives are used around stock or in a team with health and safety rules, a safety knife reduces the chance of a cut:

  • Auto-retract (Tajima LC959, VR103, Fiskars self-retracting). You hold the slider to cut, let go and the blade springs straight back inside the body. It can't be left open on a bench.
  • Concealed blade (Cutsafe Kingfisher). The blade sits hidden inside a guide and cuts cartons and strapping without an exposed edge, so it can't nick the product or your hand.
  • Carton and package openers (Keen KSCO, Fiskars). Short hooked blades sized to slit tape and open boxes and nothing more.

Craft and precision knives

Replacement blades come in coded packs, and the code has to match the knife. Use this as a starting guide:

Blades sell in packs from 5 up to 100, so a busy bench can stock up once. If you're not sure which blade fits an older knife, the code is usually stamped on the slider or printed on the original pack.
