Foot Rests

A foot rest fixes one of the most common desk problems: feet that dangle or sit flat on the floor with your knees at the wrong angle. If your chair is set so your arms reach the desk but your feet don't sit flat, a foot rest fills the gap, takes the strain off your lower back and keeps the blood moving in your legs. We stock the simple fixed kind, height and tilt-adjustable models you set with your feet, rocking rests that keep you moving, and massage versions for tired feet.

If you set your chair so your arms reach the desk comfortably but your feet then dangle or only your toes touch the floor, yes. A foot rest supports your feet flat, which takes pressure off your lower back and the backs of your thighs. It's especially useful for shorter people and at desks that won't go low enough.

Aim for feet flat with your knees at around a right angle. That's why adjustable models are popular, you can dial in the exact height. Ranges vary, so check each product: some adjust up to 145mm, others sit lower for a smaller gap.

A rocking rest lets your feet and legs move while you work, instead of staying still. That movement helps circulation and stops your legs stiffening up. Some, like the Kensington Slimline, even work at a standing desk.

Many are. The adjustable Kensington and Fellowes models change height and tilt with your feet, so they suit shared or hot desks where more than one person sits through the week. Fixed models are simpler and cost less if it's just for you.

Which foot rest suits you?

Fixed and tilt-adjustable

  • The everyday choice. A solid platform, often with a tilt you can set, to get your feet flat and knees near a right angle
  • The Kensington Ergonomic adjusts both height and slope (0 to 36 degrees) independently, all without leaving your chair

Lock or rock

  • The Fellowes Adjustable locks at 105, 125 or 145mm, or unlocks to rock freely, set entirely with your feet so there's no bending down

Active rocking

  • The Kensington Slimline Rocking rest moves a full 360 degrees to keep your legs active, and works whether you're seated or at a standing desk

Massage

  • The Kensington Solemassage and DAC Ultimate add a textured, exercising surface to work tired ankles and feet

Tight on space

  • The Kensington Space Saving rest is built for smaller desks, with a 12 or 18 degree tilt and a compact footprint

Do you actually need a foot rest?

Here's the quick test. Set your chair height so your forearms are level with the desk and your elbows sit around a right angle. If your feet now hang or only your toes reach the floor, that's exactly what a foot rest is for. It's a common issue for shorter people and at fixed-height desks that can't go low enough. Getting your feet supported flat takes the pressure off the backs of your thighs and your lower back, which is where a lot of desk discomfort starts.

Fixed, adjustable, rocking or massage

A fixed or tilt-adjustable rest is the everyday pick: a stable platform, sometimes with an angle you can set. Adjustable models like the Kensington Ergonomic and the Fellowes Adjustable let you change height and tilt with your feet, no bending required. Rocking rests such as the Kensington Slimline keep your legs gently moving through the day, which helps circulation, and a few even work at a standing desk. Massage versions add a textured surface to work tired feet. Most have a non-slip base so they stay put.

Getting the height right

The goal is feet flat with your knees at roughly 90 degrees. Adjustable rests give you a range to dial in, which matters if more than one person uses the desk or if you switch between sitting and standing. Look at the height range on each model: some go up to 145mm or more, others sit lower and suit a shallower gap. A tilt or slope setting lets you angle your feet slightly forward, which many people find more comfortable than flat.

Part of a comfortable setup

A foot rest is one piece of the puzzle. If you're sorting out your whole desk, a supportive ergonomic chair does the heavy lifting, a standing desk lets you change position through the day, and an anti-fatigue mat helps when you're on your feet.
