From a school HB to an artist's full graphite set, this is the writing and drawing range. The grading on the side of a pencil, H for hard and B for black, tells you how light or dark it draws, and the rest is choosing between wooden and mechanical. Head to pencils, colour pencils or mechanical pencils below.

They are the grade. H pencils are harder and draw a lighter, finer line; B pencils are softer and draw a darker line; HB is the middle, everyday writing grade. Artists use 2B to 6B for shading and H grades for fine detail.
They suit different jobs. Mechanical pencils never need sharpening and keep a constant line width, which is great for notes and drafting. Wooden pencils give a range of grades for drawing and shading and feel more natural to many artists.
A small set spanning roughly 2H to 6B covers most sketching, giving you light lines to build up and soft grades to shade and darken. Our sketching and graphic pencil sets are put together for exactly this.
The common sizes are 0.5mm and 0.7mm. A 0.5mm lead writes a finer line for detail and small writing, while 0.7mm is a touch stronger and less prone to snapping. Match the refill lead to your pencil size.

Reading pencil grades, H to B

Graphite pencils are graded by hardness. H pencils are harder and draw a lighter, finer line that holds a point, which suits technical and fine work. B pencils are softer and draw a darker, richer line, so 2B to 6B are the ones artists shade with. HB sits in the middle and is the everyday writing pencil.

Mechanical pencils skip sharpening altogether and feed a thin lead at a constant width, handy for notes and drafting, while colour pencils and pastels are for illustration and craft. If you are buying for school or a studio, match the grade to the task and keep a sharpener and a soft eraser nearby.

How pencil grades work

The letters on a pencil are a scale of hardness. H grades are harder and draw a lighter, finer line that keeps a point, while B grades are softer and lay down a darker, richer line. HB sits in the middle as the everyday writing grade, and our pencils range runs the full span from school HB up to artist 6B.

Wooden or mechanical

A wooden pencil gives you that range of grades and a natural feel, but it needs a sharpener. A mechanical pencil feeds a thin lead at a constant width and never needs sharpening, which makes it the pick for notes, maths and drafting. Keep spare leads on hand so you are never caught out.

Colour and the art side

For illustration and craft, colour pencils, pastels and crayons add the colour, and a proper sketching set spans the grades an artist builds a drawing with. A soft eraser and a good point make all the difference.
