Key Cabinets

A key cabinet is a lockable steel box that keeps every spare and working key in one place, hung on numbered hooks behind a locked door instead of floating in a drawer. They earn their keep anywhere a set of keys has to be tracked: property and real estate offices, motels and holiday parks, schools, warehouses, trades workshops and building managers.

We stock cabinets from 20 keys up to 200, in three ranges (Office Mate, Helix and Esselte). One sizing tip before you choose: key collections only grow, so pick a cabinet with room to spare rather than one that is full on day one.

What size key cabinet should I buy?

Count the keys you manage now and choose the next size up. Key collections grow as listings, spare sets and contractor keys come in, so headroom saves you replacing the cabinet in a year. We range from 20 keys (Esselte No1) to 200 keys (Helix 200).

How does the numbering and tag system work?

Each key gets a numbered tag, and the hooks inside are numbered to match. You log what each number holds on the index sheet (the Helix cabinets include one) and keep it on the inside of the door. Record the tag number against each key so an empty hook instantly shows which key is out.

Can these be wall-mounted?

Yes. The Helix and Esselte cabinets are wall-mount and come with plugs and screws. The Office Mate models go either way, wall-mounted or free-standing on a shelf, if you would rather not drill.

How are they locked?

With a key lock in the door, and two keys are supplied with every cabinet. These are not combination or digital units, so there is no code to set or forget. Keep one key on your person and the spare somewhere separate and secure.

Are they secure enough for master keys and property keys?

For day-to-day key control, yes. They are steel-bodied with a lock, which keeps keys out of sight and deters a casual grab, which is what offices, motels and property managers need. They are key management cabinets, not high-security safes, so anything beyond keys belongs in a safe.

What comes in the box?

Every cabinet includes two keys for the door lock and a set of numbered key tags. The Helix models add a wall fixing kit, an index sheet and a labelling kit. The Esselte cabinets include colourful tags plus plugs and screws for mounting.

What is the difference between Office Mate, Helix and Esselte?

Office Mate (40 and 70 keys) is the only range that is both free-standing and wall-mountable. Helix (50 to 200 keys) is the one to scale with and includes an index and labelling kit. Esselte (20 to 93 keys) covers the smaller end with colourful tags. All three are grey steel.

Can I store more keys than the rated number?

Up to a point. A single hook can hold a small bunch, so you can squeeze extra keys in, but it gets harder to find the right one and you lose the one-tag-per-hook tracking. If you are regularly over the rated count, move up a size.

How many keys do you need to hold?

Cabinets are rated by the number of hooks. Pick by your current key count, then go up a size for headroom:
