Shredder waste bags are sized to a specific machine's bin, so the only thing to get right is matching the bag to your shredder model. We stock bags for the common Fellowes, Dahle and Ideal series, listed by the models each one fits.

Find the model number on your shredder, usually on a label at the back or on the base, then choose the bag listed as fitting that model or series. Bags are sized to a specific bin, so a bag for one range will not fit another machine.
They are not essential, but they make emptying a cross-cut or micro-cut machine far tidier, because fine particles spill easily without a bag. A bag also lets you lift a full load straight out without tipping the bin.
Shredder waste bags are designed as single-use liners. You fill one, tie it off and replace it. Many are sold in packs so you have spares on hand.
You can, but a generic bag often does not match the bin shape, so it slips down or tears. A bag sized to your model sits correctly and holds the full load.
