A rollerball gives you the wet, effortless line of a fountain pen without any of the fuss, drawing liquid or gel ink through a rolling ball tip. It is the pen for people who love how a fountain pen writes but want to just pick it up and go.

Both use a ball tip, but a rollerball feeds a wetter liquid or gel ink, so it writes a smoother, darker line with less pressure. A ballpoint uses thick oil-based ink that dries faster and lasts longer but feels firmer.
A rollerball gives a similar wet, flowing line but uses a sealed ball tip and a cartridge or refill, so there is no nib to look after and no filling from a bottle. It is the lower-maintenance way to get that feel.
The wet ink can feather or soak through thin, absorbent paper. Using a heavier or smoother paper, or a finer tip, fixes it. On good paper the line stays crisp.
Many rollerballs take a replacement refill in liquid or gel ink, so you keep the barrel. Match the refill to your pen model, as fittings differ between brands.

Fountain-pen flow, cartridge ease

A rollerball uses a wetter liquid or gel ink than a ballpoint, fed through a rolling ball tip, so it writes a smooth, dark line with almost no pressure. That makes signing, marking and long writing feel effortless, and the line is richer and bolder than a ballpoint's.

The cost of that flow is that the ink can feather or bleed on cheap, absorbent paper and takes a touch longer to dry. Use it on decent paper and it is hard to beat. Many rollerballs take a replacement refill, so a barrel you like can keep going for years.

A rollerball was designed to capture how a fountain pen writes, that wet, dark, flowing line, while keeping the convenience of a sealed tip and a cartridge. The ink rolls on with almost no pressure, so signing and long writing feel smooth rather than like hard work.

Pick your paper

The only real catch is that the wet ink can feather or bleed on cheap, absorbent paper and dries a moment slower than a ballpoint. On decent paper it is excellent. If you want the genuine article, step up to a fountain pen; for a slightly drier line, gel pens are close.

Most rollerballs accept a replacement refill, so a pen you like can last for years. Just match the refill to your model.
