Oiling the cutters keeps a shredder sharp, quiet and jam-free, and it comes two ways: a bottle of oil you run across a sheet, or a pre-soaked sheet you simply shred. See bottles and lubricating sheets from Fellowes, Rexel, Dahle and Ideal.

As a guide, oil each time you empty the bin for a cross-cut or micro-cut machine, or whenever it sounds laboured or starts to jam. Strip-cut machines need it less often. Regular oiling keeps the cutters sharp and the motor working less hard.
A bottle of oil is poured across a sheet of paper and fed through, which is economical and lets you control how much you use. A lubricating sheet is a pre-soaked card you simply shred, with no pouring and no mess. Both do the same job; the sheet is just tidier.
Use oil sold as shredder oil. Ordinary lubricants and aerosols can be too thin, can gum up, or can damage the cutters. Shredder oil is formulated to coat the blades and clear paper dust without harming the mechanism.
Shredder oil is generally compatible across brands, so a bottle of Fellowes, Rexel or Dahle oil will lubricate most machines. Lubricating sheets work the same way in any shredder, since you simply shred them.

There are two ways to oil a shredder. A bottle of oil is the economical choice: squeeze a line across a sheet of paper and feed it through, which spreads oil over the cutters. A lubricating sheet is the no-mess option: it is a card already soaked in lubricant that you shred like any other page, with nothing to pour or wipe up.

Why oiling matters

A shredder cuts paper between fine blades, and paper dust slowly builds up on them. Oiling clears that dust and coats the cutters so they stay sharp, the motor works less hard, and the machine jams far less often. A few minutes of maintenance adds years to a shredder's life.
