Permanent markers for the office, warehouse and worksite. The two things that matter are the tip and the ink: a bullet tip for everyday writing, a chisel for broad marking, a superfine for CDs and glass, plus xylene or low-odour formulas depending on where you use them. Black, white and colour ranges from Sharpie, Artline, Staedtler, Pilot, Schneider and Uni.

A bullet tip is round and gives one consistent line width, which suits everyday writing and labelling. A chisel tip is flat and wedge-shaped, so you get a thin line on its edge and a broad line when you hold it flat. Choose chisel if you want both thick and thin strokes from one pen, or for marking that needs to stand out.

Xylene is the solvent in heavy-duty permanent ink. It grips tough surfaces and resists weather, but it has a strong smell, so it is best used in a workshop or warehouse with airflow. For an office, classroom or anywhere with poor ventilation, choose a low-odour marker instead. The marking is still permanent, with much less smell.

Most will write on all three, though glossy and non-porous surfaces hold the ink better with a xylene-based marker. For glass specifically, a dedicated glass marker gives a cleaner, more reliable line. On very smooth surfaces, let the ink dry fully before handling so it does not smear.

A standard marker smears or beads on cold, damp surfaces. A freezer-bag marker is formulated to write on chilled and frozen packaging, so it is the right choice for kitchens, butcheries and cool stores. Keep one separate from your general markers so it is always on hand.

Some can. Refillable models take a matching ink bottle, so you top up the same pen instead of throwing it out, which saves money and waste if you use a lot of markers. Check the product details for a refill option, and order the matching ink at the same time.

Permanent Markers for Every Job

Browse by tip first. Bullet tips give a steady round line for labelling boxes and folders, chisel tips switch from thin to broad depending on the angle, and superfine tips handle fiddly jobs like CDs and glass. Bigger jumbo markers are for signage and pallets that need to be read across a yard.

After that it comes down to ink and surface. Xylene-based markers bite into the toughest materials and last outdoors, while low-odour markers are easier to live with in a closed office or classroom. There are also specialist markers for cold freezer bags, plus a few refillable ones if you go through a lot.

Pick the marker tip first

Most marker frustration comes down to the wrong tip, not the wrong brand. A bullet tip is the all-rounder for writing on boxes, folders and CDs. A chisel tip gives you a thin line on its edge and a broad one laid flat, which is why sign-writers and warehouse crews reach for it. A superfine tip is for detail work where a normal marker is too fat, and a jumbo tip is for marking that has to be read from a distance.

Xylene or low-odour ink

This is the part most people skip, and it matters. Xylene-based markers have the strongest solvent ink, so they grip difficult surfaces like plastic, metal and glossy card and hold up to weather and handling. The trade-off is the fumes, so they suit a workshop or loading bay more than a meeting room. Low-odour markers use a gentler alcohol-based ink that is far easier in a closed office or classroom, with only a small drop in how aggressively it bites. Match the marker to the surface

Standard permanent markers cover most jobs, but a few surfaces need their own pen. Cold and damp beats normal ink, so freezer and chiller stock calls for a dedicated freezer-bag marker. Glass and shiny ceramics are better handled by a glass marker, and decorative or craft work on dark or porous surfaces is where opaque paint markers shine. Colours, white markers and refills

Black does the bulk of the work, but assorted colour packs are handy for colour-coding stock, files or wiring. White and other light markers are made to show up on dark or transparent surfaces where black disappears.
