      Office chair mats that protect your floor and let your chair roll freely. The choice comes down to your floor: a smooth-based mat for hard floors like timber, vinyl and tile, or a spiked mat that grips into carpet. On carpet you also match the pile depth. Sizes from compact to full desk-and-chair zones, in standard PVC or longer-lasting polycarbonate, from Marbig, Floortex and Fellowes.

      Look at what your chair sits on. Hard floors like timber, vinyl, laminate and tile need a smooth-based hard-floor mat. Carpet needs a mat with gripper spikes underneath so it does not slide. Using the wrong one means either scratches on a hard floor or a mat that slides on carpet.

      Pile depth is how thick and deep your carpet fibres are. Press a finger into the carpet: thin commercial loop is low pile, standard cut-pile office carpet is medium, and soft domestic carpet is usually deep. Match the mat to that depth so the gripper spikes can reach through and hold. If you are unsure, an any-pile mat covers a wide range.

      For light use, PVC is fine. Polycarbonate is worth it if the mat sees daily use or a heavier person, because it stays rigid and clear and does not curl, dent or cloud the way PVC can over time. Think of it as the longer-lasting option rather than a different job.

      Rectangular mats suit a straight run of desk, while keyhole or lipped mats have a tongue that tucks under the desk so your chair can roll right back. For size, allow enough room for your chair to move in every direction you use, plus a bit of margin. The larger 1200 x 1500mm mats cover a full desk-and-chair zone.

      A chair mat protects the floor while you are seated and rolling. For standing, you want a cushioned anti-fatigue mat instead, which supports your legs and back. Many sit-stand desk users keep both, swapping underfoot as they change position through the day.

      Chair Mats for Carpet and Hard Floors

      Start with your floor. Hard-floor mats have a smooth underside that sits flat on timber, vinyl, laminate and tile. Carpet mats have small gripper spikes underneath that bite into the pile so the mat does not slide, and the spike length is matched to low, medium or deep pile.

      After that it is about how long you want it to last. PVC mats are the everyday option and do the job, while polycarbonate mats cost a bit more but stay rigid and clear and resist the curling and denting that catches up with cheaper mats. Keyhole and rectangular shapes both feature, so pick the one that fits your desk.

      Match the mat to your floor

      This is where most chair mats go wrong. A mat built for one floor will not work on the other. A carpet mat has gripper spikes on the underside that dig into the pile to hold it still, so on a hard floor those same spikes scratch the surface and the mat rocks. A hard-floor mat has a smooth base, so on carpet it has nothing to grip and slides around. Get the floor right first and everything else falls into place.

      Get the carpet pile right

      If you are on carpet, the pile depth matters as much as the spikes themselves. A short-spiked low-pile mat sitting on thick plush carpet will not reach the backing, so it sinks and shifts. Push your finger into the carpet to gauge the depth: thin commercial loop is low pile, most cut-pile office carpet is medium or standard, and soft domestic carpet is usually deep.       PVC or polycarbonate

      PVC is the everyday material and does the job at a lower price, though over time it can dent under castors, curl at the edges or cloud slightly. Polycarbonate is the upgrade: it is rigid, stays clear and lies flat for years without curling or cracking, which is why it suits a busy desk or a heavier user.       Chair mats and standing mats are different

      One thing worth clearing up: a chair mat and a sit-stand mat are not the same product. A chair mat is a hard, flat surface so your chair rolls freely and your floor stays protected. A sit-stand mat is soft and cushioned to take the strain off your legs while you stand.
