A compendium is the simple way to turn up to a meeting organised: one A4 folder that holds a writing pad, your documents and a few business cards, so you're not juggling loose paper. The choice comes down to what's built in, how it closes, and whether you need to carry it. We stock Marbig, Spirax, GBP and Rexel, from a plain pocketed folio up to an expanding conference satchel.

They're A4, sized to hold standard A4 documents, a refill pad and punched paper. That's the everyday office and meeting size.

A compendium is a slim writing folio you open flat to take notes and hold a few documents. A conference satchel is a larger zipped bag that expands to carry a full folder plus handouts, samples and anything else you gather at an event.

Choose a ring binder if you carry punched handouts you want to add to and reorder. Choose a display book if you mainly present finished documents and want them protected in clear sleeves.

Most compendiums take a standard A4 pad that drops into the writing side, so you can keep refilling the same cover. We stock A4 pads in notepads and refills and related stationery.

For carrying, yes. A zip-around cover stops paper sliding out in a bag and protects the contents. If your compendium mostly lives on a desk, an open cover is quicker to use and usually lighter.

What's inside a compendium

At its simplest a compendium is a padded A4 folder with a writing pad on one side and pockets on the other for loose paper, plus a few slots for business cards. From there they add features depending on the job:

  • Plain pockets hold documents and a notepad. The Marbig 5-pocket is a good everyday example.
  • Ring binder versions (like the GBP A4) let you carry punched handouts and dividers and swap pages in and out.
  • Display book versions hold finished documents in clear sleeves so you can present a proposal without it getting marked.
  • Calculator built into the cover for quick numbers in a meeting.

How it closes

An open-cover compendium is quick to flip open and lies flat on a desk. A full zip-around cover, like the Spirax executive or Rexel, seals the whole thing shut so nothing falls out when it's in a bag, and it keeps the cover clean. If you mostly work at a desk, open is fine; if you carry it between sites, zipped is worth it.

Carrying it

A flat compendium tucks under an arm. Some add a drop-down handle so they double as a slim satchel between meetings. When you need to carry a folder plus the bits you pick up through a day of sessions, an expanding conference satchel zips closed and gussets out to make room.
