If ballpoints feel scratchy, a gel pen is the fix. Its water-based gel ink glides with barely any pressure and lays down rich, vivid colour, which is why it has a loyal following for journalling, note-taking and anyone who writes a lot by hand.

A ballpoint uses thick oil-based ink that dries instantly and lasts a long time. A gel pen uses a wetter, water-based gel ink that writes more smoothly and shows brighter colour, but uses up faster and takes a moment to dry.
They can if you write over fresh ink before it dries, which matters most for left-handers. Choosing a quick-dry gel pen and a finer tip reduces it, and the ink sets fully within a second or two.
A 0.5mm or 0.7mm tip is the comfortable all-rounder. Go to 0.38mm for small, detailed handwriting, or up to 1.0mm for a bold, fast line that stands out.

What makes gel ink different
