A clipboard is the most useful 10 dollars you'll spend on the office floor. We stock the full spread: Foolscap and A4 hardboard, PVC boards with a privacy flap, aluminium boxes that double as a writing desk, and tough clipfolders for the trade. Brands like FM, Marbig and Fellowes, in plain black through to hi-vis. Not sure which size you need? Foolscap versus A4 is sorted below.

Foolscap is slightly taller and wider than A4, the traditional size for many NZ forms, invoices and inspection sheets. A Foolscap clipboard holds A4 paper fine, with a little board showing at the edges, but an A4 clipboard won't fit Foolscap paper. If your forms are Foolscap, buy Foolscap.

Look for a storage clipboard with a sealed compartment or an aluminium box, they keep paperwork dry and give you somewhere to stash pens and spare forms. A clipfolder with a cover adds extra protection for site visits, deliveries and inspections.

It's a clipboard with a hollow box underneath the writing surface. You lift the board to store pens, calculators, forms and small items, so it works as a portable mini desk. Handy for stocktakes, nursing rounds, security and anywhere you're working away from a desk.

A clipfolder is a clipboard with a hinged cover and usually inside pockets. The cover protects your documents and keeps them confidential, while the pockets hold loose paper. Choose a plain clipboard for speed, or a clipfolder when you need to carry and protect a set of documents.

Pick the right clipboard

It comes down to the board and the size. Hardboard is the cheap, sturdy classic for everyday forms. PVC with a flap keeps paperwork private and protected, good for reception and HR. Storage clipboards have a compartment underneath for pens, forms and a calculator, ideal for stocktakes and site work. Aluminium box versions are the hard-wearing pick for the trade. For size, most NZ forms are Foolscap (a touch longer than A4), so check your paperwork before you buy. Going outdoors or on the tools? Look for a storage box or a clipfolder with a cover.
