Dividers & Indices

A binder without dividers is a stack of paper you have to read through. Tab dividers turn it into named sections you can flick straight to. The two decisions are cardboard or polypropylene, and how many tabs. Dividers live inside the binders in ring binders and lever arch files.

Cardboard or polypropylene dividers?

Cardboard dividers are cheaper and suit binders that do not get opened every day. The tab takes a written or printed label. Polypropylene dividers cost more but handle constant use without the tabs softening or tearing, which is why they last in a reference binder that gets flicked through all the time.

How many tabs do I need?

Match the tab count to your sections. A 5-tab set suits broad categories, 10-tab handles a detailed manual, A-Z indices sort by name or supplier, and 1-31 gives a tab per day for a follow-up or bring-forward system. 1-12 covers a month-per-tab year planner.

Will the dividers fit my binder?

A4 dividers fit standard A4 ring binders and lever arch files, and most are punched with the universal multi-hole pattern so they sit on 2, 3 or 4-ring mechanisms. Check that the tabs extend past your page protectors if you file in pockets, since some sit flush to the page edge.

What are Post-it filing tabs for?

They stick directly onto paper or a folder edge to create an instant tab without a punched divider. They suit marking sections in a notebook or flagging pages in a document that is not going into a ring binder, and they come lined for writing on.

Can I print my own divider tabs?

Yes. Avery and FM make printable index sets with a software template, so you run the insert sheet through a laser or inkjet printer and slot the labels into clear tabs. For one or two dividers, writing the tab by hand is quicker.

Cardboard or polyprop, then count the tabs

Cardboard indices are the cheaper option and take a written or printed insert in the tab. Polypropylene tabs cost a little more and survive years of daily flicking without tearing or curling. Tab counts run from 5 and 10 for broad sections up to A-Z for names and 1-31 for a day-of-the-month system. The two decisions

Everything in this category comes down to material and tab count. Cardboard indices are the volume buy, cheap enough to put a fresh set in every binder, with a tab that takes a written or printed label. Polypropylene dividers cost a bit more and earn it in a binder that gets opened daily, since the tabs flex instead of tearing and shrug off years of flicking. Counting the tabs

Tab count is really a question of how you sort. Five and ten-tab sets split a binder into broad sections, which is most office filing. A-Z indices are for sorting by name, client or supplier, and the numbered sets do the rest: 1-12 for a month per tab, 1-31 for a day-of-the-month bring-forward file, and longer numeric runs for parts and account systems. Buy the count that matches your sections rather than the biggest set, since spare tabs just get in the way.

Stick-on tabs and printed inserts

Not every tab needs a punched divider. Post-it filing tabs stick straight onto paper or a folder edge for an instant section marker, lined so you can write on them, and they suit notebooks and loose documents that are not going into a ring binder. At the other end, Avery and FM printable index sets run through your own printer from a template, which is worth it once you are labelling more than a handful of tabs.
