The number that matters most on a laminating pouch is the micron, and it's the one people get wrong. It's the thickness of each side, so a higher number means a stiffer, tougher result. 80 micron is the everyday choice for notices and certificates, 150 micron suits cards and IDs that get handled, and 250 micron comes out rigid enough for menus and signs. We stock every common size from A2 down to business-card, in gloss or matt, plus self-laminating pouches you can seal by hand with no machine at all.

For everyday notices and certificates, 80 micron is fine. For ID cards and badges that get handled, go 150 micron so they stay stiff. For menus and signs used all day, 250 micron comes out rigid. Thicker pouches need a laminator rated for that weight, so check your machine first.

Not better, just thicker and stiffer. A higher micron is the right call for items that get handled a lot, but for a notice that sits on a wall it's overkill and costs more. Match the micron to how hard the item will be used.

Gloss lifts colour and gives a shiny, wipe-clean finish, which is what most people want. Matt cuts glare, so it reads better under bright lights and doesn't reflect when photographed. Both protect the sheet the same way.

Yes. 3L self-laminating pouches, sheets and cards seal cold by hand, no laminator needed. They're great for the occasional badge or card but cost more per piece, so for any volume a heat laminator and a box of pouches is better value.

Only if your laminator opens wide enough for A3. Many home and small-office machines are A4 only. Check the maximum width on your machine before buying A3 pouches.

Which micron and size do you need?

Choosing the micron (thickness)

  • 75 to 80 micron: the everyday weight for notices, certificates, flyers and menus that stay on a wall. Flexible and the lowest cost per pouch
  • 100 to 125 micron: a bit stiffer for items that get picked up, like reference sheets and signage
  • 150 micron: the sweet spot for ID cards, name badges and passes that live in a pocket or on a lanyard
  • 175 to 250 micron: heavy and rigid, near board-like, for menus, repeated-use signs and anything handled all day

Choosing the size

  • A4 and A3: documents, posters, charts and notices (check your machine takes A3 before buying A3)
  • A5 and A6: half and quarter-page notices, recipe cards, smaller signs
  • Card sizes (54 x 86mm up to 80 x 110mm): ID cards, badges, luggage tags and passes

Gloss or matt

  • Gloss lifts colour and gives a shiny, wipe-clean finish, the usual pick
  • Matt cuts glare, so it reads better under bright lights and photographs without reflections

Micron is the number that matters

Micron measures the thickness of each side of the pouch, so an 80 micron pouch is 80 on the front and 80 on the back. The higher the number, the stiffer and tougher the finished result. For everyday notices and certificates, 80 micron is plenty and the cheapest per piece. For ID cards and badges that get handled, step up to 150 micron so they don't crease. For menus, signs and anything used all day, 250 micron comes out almost as rigid as card. One catch worth knowing: thicker pouches need a laminator that can handle the weight, so check your machine's micron rating before you buy the heavy stuff.

Match the size to the job

We carry A2, A3, A4, A5 and A6, plus a run of small sizes from 54 x 86mm up to 80 x 110mm for ID cards, badges and luggage tags. A4 covers most documents and certificates. A3 suits posters and double-page notices, but only if your laminator opens wide enough to take it. If you're protecting a poster that needs to look sharp on a wall, a poster frame is the alternative to laminating.

Gloss or matt finish

Gloss is the default. It deepens colour and gives that shiny, wipe-clean surface most people expect. Matt is the one to reach for when glare is a problem, under fluorescent office lights or for signage that gets photographed, because it kills the reflection while still protecting the sheet.

No laminator? Self-laminating pouches

If you only need to protect the odd card or badge, 3L self-laminating pouches, sheets and labels seal cold by hand with no machine required. Peel, place and press. They cost more per piece than a heat pouch, so they suit low volumes rather than a whole stack. For anything regular, a cheap laminator and a box of 100 pouches works out far better value.
