It depends on the method. Comb and wire machines need combs or wire plus punched covers; coil machines need plastic coils sized to the page count; and thermal machines need pre-glued thermal covers by spine width. All are sold separately so you reorder only what you use.
Match the diameter to the page count. As a guide, a small 6 to 10mm size suits a thin report, 12 to 20mm an everyday document, and 25mm and up a thick manual. Choose a size slightly larger than the stack so pages turn freely.
