Lateral filing stores files side-on, spine outward, on open shelving rather than hanging front-to-back in drawers. You read the end tab the way you read book spines on a bookshelf. It fits more files into the same floor space than drawer cabinets and makes retrieval faster once the colour coding is set up.
Each file gets colour labels on its end tab, by letter for alphabetical systems or by digit for numeric ones. Filed in order, the colours form bands along the shelf. A file put back in the wrong place breaks the band and stands out immediately, which is what keeps a large system accurate.
