A good ergonomic chair is the one piece of office kit you sit in all day, so it pays to match it to how long you sit and how your back behaves. Look past the label and check the adjustments. A real ergonomic chair lets you set seat height, recline and lock the backrest, and support your lower back, ideally with seat tilt and adjustable arms as well. If it only raises and lowers, it is a basic operator chair. Every chair in this range is built around proper adjustment, from simple 2-lever task chairs up to synchro-tilt models.

A 2-lever chair adjusts seat height and back angle. A 3-lever chair adds independent seat tilt, so you can angle the seat as well as the backrest. If you sit for full days, the extra adjustment of a 3-lever or synchro-tilt chair is worth it. For shorter stints or a hot desk, a 2-lever is usually enough.

Both support you well, so it is mostly about feel. A mesh back breathes and suits warm rooms or anyone who runs hot. A fabric foam back is softer and more cushioned, which some people prefer for cooler spaces. Check whether the model has an adjustable lumbar either way, as that matters more for your back than the back material.

A 24/7 chair is rated for round-the-clock, multi-shift use, where different people sit in the same chair through the day and night. They are built tougher than a standard task chair, with stronger components and higher weight ratings, because they clock far more hours.

What actually makes a chair "ergonomic"

The word gets stuck on a lot of chairs that are not. A genuinely ergonomic chair lets you adjust it to your body rather than forcing your body to fit it. At a minimum that means seat height, a backrest that reclines and locks, and support that sits in the curve of your lower back. From there you are looking at seat tilt, adjustable arms, and a headrest if you want neck support on a high back. If a chair only goes up and down, it is a basic operator chair, not an ergonomic one.

How the levers work

The number of levers tells you how much you can adjust:

  • 2-lever: seat height plus back angle. Simple, quick to set, good for hot desks and shorter sessions.
  • 3-lever: adds independent seat tilt, so you can angle the seat as well as the back. This is the sweet spot for full work days.
  • Synchro-tilt: the back and seat recline together at a set ratio as you lean, keeping your feet planted and your eyes level with the screen. The most natural movement for long sitting.

Most chairs here also have a gas lift for height, a five-star base on castors, and tension control so the recline matches your weight.

Match the chair to your hours

Task and studio chairs cover everyday desk work. They are the practical pick for a home office, a hot desk or a team fit-out where people are seated in normal stretches rather than all day without a break.

Executive high-backs add height to the backrest, more padding and often a headrest. They suit a manager's office or anyone at the desk for long unbroken days.

24/7 chairs are rated for round-the-clock multi-shift use, the kind that goes into control rooms, security desks, reception and anywhere a single chair is never empty. They are built tougher than a standard task chair because they cop more hours.

Mesh back or fabric back

Both are fine choices. It comes down to airflow versus cushioning:
