How does carbon paper work?

You place the carbon sheet coated side down between the page you write on and a blank page underneath. As you write or type with pressure, the coating transfers onto the lower page, creating a copy. The harder and clearer you press, the better the copy comes out.

Which way does the carbon paper face?

The coated, darker side faces down, towards the copy you want to make. The page you write on sits on top, then the carbon, then the blank page that receives the copy. If your copy comes out blank, the carbon is likely the wrong way up.

What is the difference between carbon paper and a carbonless book?

Carbon paper is a separate sheet you insert yourself each time. A carbonless duplicate book, like an invoice or receipt book, has the copying chemical built into the pages, so you just write on the top sheet and a copy appears below with no loose carbon. For regular duplicate forms, a book is tidier; carbon paper suits one-off copies.
