Binding Machines

A binding machine turns loose printouts into a finished document. The first choice is the method: comb binding can be reopened to swap pages, wire binding gives a flat professional finish, and thermal binding glues a clean book-style spine with no hole-punching at all. After that it comes down to how many sheets you bind and whether you want a manual or electric punch. Brands here are GBC, Fellowes and Rexel.

It depends on whether you need to reopen the document. Comb binding is the only method you can open again to add or remove pages, so it suits reports and manuals that change. Wire binding gives a smarter finish that lies flat but is permanent once crimped. Thermal binding needs no hole-punching and produces a clean book-style spine, which suits tenders and premium reports.

Yes. The machine punches and binds, but the combs, wire coils and covers are consumables sized to your page count, so you buy them to suit each job. Keep a range of sizes on hand so you are not caught short.

Match the comb diameter to how thick the document is. As a guide, a 10mm comb holds about 65 sheets, 12mm about 95, and 25mm around 225 at 80gsm. If you are between sizes, go up rather than down so the pages turn freely.

Yes, that is the main advantage of comb binding. The machine has a lever that reopens the comb so you can add or pull pages, then close it again. Wire and thermal binding are permanent.

A manual machine is fine for occasional binding and costs less. If your team binds documents most days, an electric punch saves real time and effort and is worth the step up. Match the punch and bind capacity to your usual page counts too.

Some multi-function machines, like the Multi Bind, handle more than one method, but most machines are built for a single method. If you regularly need two finishes, a combination machine or two dedicated machines is more reliable than forcing one to do everything.

Comb, Wire and Thermal Binders

Most of the range is comb binders, the everyday choice for reports and manuals because you can reopen a comb to add or remove pages. Wire binders crimp a metal loop for a smarter finish that lies flat, and thermal binders melt a glued cover around the spine for a book-like result. A few machines, like the Lyra and Multi Bind, combine jobs in one unit.

Whichever you pick, the combs, wire coils and covers are consumables you buy separately and size to your page count. Manual machines suit occasional binding; electric punches earn their keep when someone is binding all day.

Start with the binding method

The method you choose decides the machine, the look and the consumables, so settle it first. There are three, and they are genuinely different jobs.

Method How it works Reopen later? Finish Best for
Comb (plastic) Punch rectangular holes, open a plastic comb on the tines, pages snap over the spine Yes, reopen to add or remove pages Functional, printable spine Reports and manuals you update
Wire (twin-loop) Punch holes, the machine crimps a metal wire loop shut No, permanent once crimped Professional, lies flat, folds back 360° Proposals, calendars, client documents
Thermal No punching. Slide pages into a pre-glued cover, heat melts the glue spine No Book-like square spine Tenders and premium reports

Match the comb size to your page count

Plastic combs are sold by their diameter in millimetres, and the bigger the comb, the more sheets it holds. Buy the size that fits your typical document, then keep a couple of sizes on hand. These are the standard GBC capacities for 80gsm paper.

Comb size Approx. sheets (80gsm) Typical use
6mm Up to 25 Thin handouts, menus
8mm Up to 45 Short reports
10mm Up to 65 Everyday reports
12mm Up to 95 Training packs
16mm Up to 145 Manuals
19mm Up to 165 Thick manuals
25mm Up to 225 Reference documents
38mm Up to 330 Large compilations
50mm Up to 425 Maximum-thickness jobs

Wire and thermal sizes work the same way, sized to spine thickness. You can stock all three in our binding supplies, and grab front and backing covers from our binding covers.

Manual or electric punch

The other lever is the punch. A manual machine uses a hand lever and is fine for the odd report; an electric punch removes the effort and the time, which adds up when someone is binding batches every day. Comb machines like the entry-level GBC A10 sit at the light end, while the electric Quasar and CombBind models handle high volume. The 3-in-1 Lyra and Multi Bind units fold stapling and hole-punching in too, handy when desk space or budget is tight.

Finishing the document

Binding is one step in making a document look the part. Many offices pair a binder with a laminator for protected covers and signs, a trimmer or guillotine to square up edges, and report or presentation covers from our report covers range.
