Most whiteboard marker problems come down to two things: a pen that dried out because someone left the cap off, and old writing that won't wipe away. We stock the markers built to fix both, from Pentel Maxiflo's pump-action ink that keeps flowing to Artline's dry-safe formula that survives a cap left off overnight. Usually the tip has dried out from the cap being left off, or the ink has settled away from the nib. Stand it tip-down for a few minutes, or shake it. To avoid it altogether, choose a pump-action marker like the Pentel Maxiflo or a dry-safe ink like the Artline 577, both built to survive an uncapped night.

A bullet (or fine) tip writes an even line and is best for everyday notes and lists. A chisel tip is angled, so it gives a thick line flat or a thin line on its edge, which suits headings and highlighting. Dual-nib markers offer both on one pen.

Write over the stubborn mark with a fresh whiteboard marker and wipe it straight away while it's still wet, which lifts most of it. Finish with a whiteboard cleaner. Ghosting often comes from ink sitting too long or a permanent marker being used by mistake.

If you use a lot, yes. A refillable like the Pilot BeGreen V Board lets you swap a cartridge and even the tip instead of binning the whole pen, which costs less over time and cuts waste. For light use, a disposable pack is simpler.

You can, but you'll get weaker colour and it can be harder to clean. Glass boards work best with glass board markers, which are made for glossy non-porous surfaces and show up brighter.

Bullet, chisel or dual-tip?

Tip shape is the first call. A bullet or fine tip writes an even line and suits notes, to-do lists and meeting-room scribbles. A chisel tip is angled, so it lays down a thick stroke for headings or a thin one when you turn it on its edge. Dual-nib markers like the Artline 541T put both on one pen. Sizes run from a fine 1.2mm up to the Artline 5109A jumbo 10mm chisel for signs and big writing.

The markers that survive the cap being left off

The most common reason a marker gets binned is that someone left the lid off and the ink dried. A few brands are built for that. Pentel Maxiflo has a pump-action button that rejuvenates the ink and keeps it flowing right to the end. Artline's 577 dry-safe ink handles up to 48 hours uncapped in controlled tests, and Quartet's DryGuard claims up to two days. In a shared office or classroom where caps go missing, these earn their keep.

Refillable and recycled options

If you get through a lot of markers, a refillable barrel costs less over time and creates less waste. The Pilot BeGreen V Board takes refill cartridges and replacement tips, and the barrel is made largely from recycled material. Staedtler runs a Lumocolor refill station, and BIC's Velleda ECOlutions line is made from 51 percent recycled content. For schools and offices buying in volume, bulk cups and 12 or 24 packs from Staedtler and Warwick bring the per-pen price down.

Whiteboard markers vs glass board markers

They are not the same. Standard whiteboard markers are made for melamine and porcelain whiteboards. Glass board markers, like the Artline glass range, are formulated for glossy non-porous surfaces and show up bright and dense on glass boards. Use the wrong one and you either get weak colour or harder cleanup.

Fixing ghosting and stubborn marks

If old writing leaves a faint shadow, that is ghosting, usually from ink left on too long or a marker that was too permanent. Going over the mark with a fresh whiteboard marker and wiping straight away often lifts it, and a proper whiteboard cleaner clears the rest.
