How do I find which toner cartridge I need?

Use the cartridge code. It is printed on the toner you are replacing and listed in the printer's on-screen menu or manual, for example TN2445, 206X or TK-1164. Type that code into search and match it exactly. Many products also list the printer models they fit, so you can check by your printer name too.

What is the difference between genuine, compatible and remanufactured?

Genuine is the printer brand's own cartridge, made by HP, Brother and so on. Compatible is a brand-new cartridge built by a third party to the same fit, sold at a lower price. Remanufactured is a used genuine cartridge that has been cleaned and refilled. All three print to the page yields shown; compatible and remanufactured simply cost less per page.

What is the difference between toner and a drum unit?

Toner is the powder that becomes the print. The drum unit is the roller that transfers the toner onto the paper. Some printers build both into one cartridge, but many Brother and other colour lasers use a separate drum that lasts roughly three to four toner changes. If prints go faint or streaky soon after a new toner, the drum is usually due.

What does high yield or XL mean?

High yield, often shown as an X or XL in the code, holds more toner and prints more pages than the standard cartridge, for example HP 206X versus 206A. It costs more up front but less per page, so it pays off if you print in volume.

Will a compatible cartridge void my printer warranty?

Using compatible toner does not automatically void a printer warranty in New Zealand, and any fault caused by a cartridge is the cartridge supplier's responsibility. Most offices switch to compatible once the printer is out of warranty to cut running costs. We deliver nationwide with free delivery on orders over $30.

Find your cartridge code, then choose your type

Every toner has a code, and that code is how you find the right one. It is printed on the cartridge you are replacing and shown in the printer's menu or manual, for example a Brother TN or DR number, an HP number like 206X, or a Kyocera TK code. Match it exactly and the cartridge will fit.

Then choose the type. Genuine is the printer brand's own cartridge. Compatible is a brand-new third-party cartridge that costs less and is the saving most offices make once the printer is out of warranty. Remanufactured is a recycled genuine shell that has been refilled. One thing colour laser owners miss: the drum unit is a separate part from the toner and lasts several toner changes before it needs replacing.

Find your cartridge code

Toner looks confusing until you realise it all turns on one thing: the cartridge code. It is printed on the cartridge you are taking out and shown in your printer's menu or manual, for example a Brother TN2445, an HP 206X, or a Kyocera TK-1164. Type that code into search and match it exactly. HP makes this trickier by giving each toner two names, a short number like 206X and a longer part code like W2110X, but both point to the same cartridge. Most listings also name the printer models a cartridge fits, so you can search by your printer instead.
