System cards, also called index cards, run a manual record system: one card per entry, sorted in a box. The choice is size, ruling and colour. For tabbed dividers to section a set, see dividers and indices.

System cards, also known as index or record cards, hold one record per card in a sorted box: a customer, a stock item, a recipe, a contact or a revision fact. They run any manual record or reference system, and students use them for flashcards and study notes. The card format makes them quick to sort, reorder and pull individually.
5 by 3 inch is the compact standard for brief entries and flashcards. 6 by 4 gives more writing room for fuller records, and 8 by 5 suits detailed notes or larger diagrams. Pick the size for the amount you write per card, and match your storage box to the card size.
Ruled cards keep written records and revision notes neat and evenly spaced. Plain cards suit sketches, diagrams, mind maps and anything that does not follow lines. Some sets come with one ruled side, giving you both options on the same card.
Colour codes a system at a glance. Assigning a colour to each category, subject or status lets you find the right group in the box without reading every card. Most ranges offer white plus a spread of colours, so you can keep white as the default and use colours for the divisions that matter.

Index cards by size and ruling

System cards go by inch sizes, 5 by 3, 6 by 4 and 8 by 5, with the larger sizes giving more room per entry. Ruled cards suit written records and revision notes, plain cards suit sketches, diagrams and freeform notes. White is the standard, and coloured cards code categories at a glance. One card per record

System cards run a manual record system the way they always have: one entry per card, sorted in a box, quick to pull, reorder and refile. They hold customers, stock, contacts, recipes or revision facts, and students rely on them for flashcards because a single card is easy to test yourself on and shuffle. The format survives because nothing beats it for a reference set you add to and reorder by hand.
