Thermal printing, no ink

Receipt printers are almost all thermal, which means they print by heating special paper rather than using ink or a ribbon. That keeps running costs to just the paper roll and makes them low-maintenance at a busy counter. A few thermal-transfer models use a ribbon when a longer-lasting print is needed.

Choosing the connection

The connection is the main decision. USB suits a fixed till wired to one computer, Ethernet suits a networked POS across several registers, and Bluetooth or wifi suits a tablet till or a counter that moves around. Star, Epson and Zebra all offer the same model in different connection options, so match it to your POS software.
