Laser printers are faster and cheaper per page for black text, so they suit offices that mainly print documents. An all-in-one, also called a multifunction printer, combines printing, copying and scanning in one machine, and many add faxing. It saves desk space and money compared with separate devices, and is the usual choice for a home office or small team.
Choose A3 if you print or copy larger documents such as plans, spreadsheets, posters or double-page layouts. An A3 machine still prints A4 and smaller, so it covers everything an A4 printer does. If you never go larger than A4, an A4 model is cheaper and more compact.
A tank printer fills from bottles of ink rather than cartridges. The machine costs more to buy but far less to run, because bottled ink is cheaper per page, so it pays off for anyone printing in volume. Epson EcoTank is the main range.

Single-function or all-in-one

A single-function printer just prints, which keeps it compact and cheap. An all-in-one, or multifunction printer, also copies and scans, and many fax too, so one machine replaces several. For most home offices and small teams an all-in-one is the practical pick, while a high-speed single-function laser can make sense where one machine just prints all day.

A4, A3 and colour

Choose A4 for everyday letters, invoices and reports, or A3 if you handle plans, spreadsheets, posters or double-page spreads, since an A3 machine still does A4.
