A one-hole sharpener fits standard graphite pencils, around 7 to 8mm across. A two-hole sharpener adds a second, wider hole for jumbo learner pencils and thick coloured pencils that will not fit a standard hole. If you only use normal pencils, one hole is fine; if you have a mix, choose two-hole.

Start with the pencil, not the sharpener

The most common mistake is buying a sharpener that will not fit the pencils you actually own. A standard graphite pencil is about 7 to 8mm across and fits any single hole. Jumbo learner pencils and thick coloured pencils run closer to 9 to 11mm, and they jam an ordinary hole. That is what the second, wider hole on a two-hole sharpener is for, and why we stock specialty models that take barrels up to 11mm. Match the hole to the pencil first, then pick the style you like.
