A good pen is worth keeping, and a refill is how you do it. Swapping the ink costs a fraction of a new pen and cuts waste, but the one thing that trips people up is fit, so the trick is matching the refill to your exact pen.

Check the brand and model printed on the pen barrel, or remove the old refill and match its length, shape and tip. Refill fittings are not universal, so matching the original is the reliable way to get one that seats correctly.
Most quality ballpoint, rollerball and gel pens take a replacement refill. Fountain pens are different, they take ink cartridges or are filled from a bottle rather than using a refill.
For a quality pen, yes. A refill costs a fraction of replacing the whole pen, and it keeps a barrel you already like out of landfill, so it is the better choice for everyday and premium pens alike.

Match the refill to your pen

Keep the pen, swap the ink

A refill is the simplest way to get more life from a pen you like. It costs far less than buying new and keeps a good barrel out of the bin, which matters as much for an everyday office pen as for a premium one.

Fit is everything

The one thing to get right is the match. Refills differ in length, shape and tip, and brands use their own fittings, so note the brand and model on the barrel or pull the old refill out to compare. Most ballpoint and rollerball pens are refillable; a fountain pen takes ink instead.
