A fountain pen turns writing into something you look forward to. It rewards a little care with a line that has character, and once you understand nib width and how it fills, choosing one is simple. New to fountain pens? Lamy and Pilot make superb, affordable starters.

A medium nib is the easiest place to start, giving a smooth, forgiving line. Choose fine if you write small or want neater notes, or broad if you like a wet, expressive line and bolder strokes.
A cartridge is a small sealed ink refill that clicks into the pen, clean and quick. A converter is a refillable reservoir that lets you fill the same pen from a bottle, which is cheaper over time and unlocks far more ink colours.
Not really. Cap them when not in use, give them an occasional rinse if you change colours, and use them regularly so the ink does not dry. In return you get a writing experience nothing else matches.

Nib width and how it fills

The nib is the heart of a fountain pen. Nibs are graded extra-fine, fine, medium and broad, with finer nibs better for small, neat handwriting and broader nibs giving a wetter, more expressive line. A good medium suits most people starting out.

The other thing to understand is filling. Cartridge pens take a small ink cartridge that clicks straight in, clean and simple, while a converter lets you fill the same pen from a bottle, opening up a far wider range of ink colours. Many modern pens do both, so you are not locked in.

Start with the nib

Everything about how a fountain pen writes starts at the nib. Nibs are graded extra-fine, fine, medium and broad: finer nibs suit small, neat handwriting, while broader nibs lay down a wetter, more expressive line. A medium is the friendliest place to begin, and you can keep a spare or upgrade later from our fountain pen nibs range.

Cartridge filling clicks a sealed ink refill straight in, clean and simple, while a converter lets you fill from a bottle for a far wider colour range and a lower cost over time. Match the right ink to your pen, since cartridges are brand-specific.

Easier to live with than you'd think

Cap it, use it regularly and give it the occasional rinse, and a fountain pen just works. If you would rather skip the upkeep entirely, a rollerball gives a similar flowing line from a cartridge.
