From a corded 1D scanner for the shop till to a rugged 2D model for the warehouse, choose by how you scan, not just the brand. Here is how 1D and 2D, corded and cordless, and the different shapes actually compare.

A 1D scanner reads the striped barcodes found on packaged retail goods. A 2D scanner reads those plus 2D codes such as QR and Data Matrix, and it can read a code shown on a phone screen. If you only scan product barcodes a 1D model is enough and costs less; if you take QR codes, loyalty apps or vouchers on a phone, choose 2D.

Only a 2D scanner can. A 1D laser cannot read light off a screen or decode a QR code, so for phone vouchers, e-tickets and membership codes you need a 2D imager.

A corded scanner plugs in over USB, never needs charging and costs less, which suits a fixed counter. A cordless scanner pairs over Bluetooth and charges in a cradle, so it can roam the floor or warehouse and scan stock you cannot bring to the till.

How to choose a barcode scanner

1D or 2D: the first decision

Every scanner here is either a 1D laser or a 2D imager, and that single choice matters more than the brand. A 1D scanner reads the striped barcodes you see on packaged retail goods, and it is the cheaper, perfectly capable pick if that is all you do. A 2D scanner reads those same barcodes plus 2D codes like QR and Data Matrix, and it can read a code shown on a phone screen, which a 1D laser cannot. If you take voucher codes, loyalty apps or e-tickets, or you simply want to be future-proof, choose 2D. The barcodes themselves come off our label printers, so it helps to know what you will be printing before you choose the scanner.

Corded or cordless

The second choice is how it connects. A corded scanner plugs into the till or PC over USB, never needs charging, and costs less, which is why it is the standard at a fixed counter. A cordless scanner pairs over Bluetooth and sits in a charging cradle between uses, so it can roam the shop floor or warehouse and reach stock you cannot bring to the counter. Cordless models usually ship with that cradle in the box. If you are kitting out a counter, a cordless scanner pairs neatly with our receipt printers and cash drawers so the whole point of sale works as one.

How it sits: handheld, hands-free or rugged

The same scanning engine comes in different bodies for different jobs. A handheld scanner is the general-purpose pick you point and trigger. A presentation scanner sits upright on the counter so you sweep items past it and keep both hands free to bag and take payment, which is what a busy supermarket or pharmacy checkout wants. A rugged scanner is sealed against dust, survives repeated drops and reads barcodes from extended range, so it earns its keep in a warehouse, yard or factory rather than at a till.

Reading codes off a phone screen

This is the question that catches people out. If you want to scan a discount code, membership card or e-ticket that a customer shows on their phone, you need a 2D scanner, because a 1D laser cannot read light off a screen. The same goes for QR codes on packaging and paperwork. It is the main reason most shops now buy 2D even when their current barcodes are only 1D, and a corded 2D model often costs little more than the 1D version it replaces.

It arrives ready to use

Most scanners here are sold as a kit, the scanner plus the cable and a stand or cradle, so there is nothing else to buy to get started.
