Stools for the bar, the kitchen island, the café and the breakout space. Most come in your choice of colour, several stack for storage, and the timber Orlo range comes in both bar and kitchen heights so you can match your benchtop.

Measure from the floor to the underside of your benchtop and allow 25-30cm for legroom. A standard kitchen or counter bench (about 90cm) suits a counter-height stool (65cm seat); a raised bar or breakfast bar (about 105-110cm) needs a bar-height stool (75cm seat). The Eden Orlo comes in both heights.

Kitchen (or counter) height stools have a lower seat, around 65cm, to suit a normal benchtop. Bar height stools sit higher, around 75cm, for a raised bar or island overhang. If your bench is a standard kitchen height, go counter; if it's a tall bar, go bar height.

The Eden Zero, Quiz, Punch, Scout and Coco stack for storage, and the timber Grove stacks too, which is unusual for a timber stool. Stacking is handy for venues that reset the floor or store stools off-season.

Solid timber (the Orlo, Grove, Babila and Cruise) looks warm and suits homes, kitchens and hospitality fit-outs. Polypropylene (Zero, Quiz, Scout, Coco) is lighter, wipes clean and handles outdoor use. Powder-coated metal like the LeGrille is the budget-friendly, hard-wearing option.

How to narrow it down:

  • Home kitchen or island — go timber and counter height. The Eden Orlo (kitchen height) in natural, sage, navy or black ash is the pick; the Babila and Cruise add a designer shell.

A good stool earns its place at a raised bench, a kitchen island, a café counter or a breakout bar. We've supplied stools to New Zealand homes, hospitality sites and offices since 2000, and the range below covers everything from a $155 metal perch to solid-ash designer stools.

Get the height right first

Height is the one thing worth measuring before you buy. Counter or kitchen height stools (seat around 65cm) suit a standard kitchen bench; bar height stools (seat around 75cm) suit a raised bar or island overhang. As a rule, leave 25-30cm between the seat and the underside of the bench for legroom.
