Go by the cartridge number, printed on the cartridge you are replacing and shown in your printer's menu or manual, for example an HP 65, a Canon PG645, an Epson 212 or a Brother LC432. Match that number exactly. Most listings also name the printer models a cartridge fits, so you can search by your printer instead.
XL cartridges hold more ink, usually around twice as much, for a small jump in price, so they almost always work out cheaper per page. Unless you barely print, the XL is the better buy. The standard size suits very light or occasional use.
Most inkjets take snap-in cartridges. Tank printers, like Epson EcoTank and WorkForce ET and HP Smart Tank, instead have refillable tanks you top up from a bottle. The two are not interchangeable, so check whether your printer uses cartridges or bottles before you order.
Original is the printer brand's own cartridge. Compatible is a brand-new third-party cartridge built to the same fit, sold for less. Remanufactured is an original cartridge that has been cleaned and refilled. Compatible and remanufactured cost less per page; all print to the yields shown.

Find your number, then standard or XL

Every ink cartridge has a number, and that number is how you find the right one. It is printed on the cartridge you are replacing and shown in your printer's menu, for example an HP 65, a Canon PG645, an Epson 212 or a Brother LC432. Match it exactly and the cartridge will fit.

Then decide standard or XL. The XL holds more ink for a small extra cost and almost always works out cheaper per page, so it is the one to buy unless you print very little. One thing to check first: EcoTank, WorkForce ET and HP Smart Tank printers refill from bottles, not cartridges, and the two do not swap.

Find your cartridge number

Ink is simple once you know the number. It is printed on the cartridge you are taking out and shown in your printer's menu or manual, for example an HP 65, a Canon PG645, an Epson 212 or a Brother LC432. Type that number into search and match it exactly. Most listings also name the printers a cartridge fits, so you can check by your printer model instead. HP, Canon, Epson and Brother each run their own numbering, so the number is always the safest way in.

Standard or XL

Nearly every cartridge comes in two sizes: standard and XL. The XL holds more ink, often about twice as much, for a small jump in price, which makes it cheaper per page. Unless you only print now and then, the XL is the better buy. It is the single easiest way to cut your running cost without changing anything else.

Cartridges or ink bottles

Most inkjets take snap-in cartridges, but tank printers work differently. Epson EcoTank and WorkForce ET, and HP Smart Tank, have refillable tanks you top up from a bottle, and one bottle prints a long way, which is the point of a tank printer. Cartridges and bottles are not interchangeable, so check which your printer uses before you order. Canon also splits its home printers into two cartridges, a PG black and a CL colour, rather than four.

Original, compatible or remanufactured

Original cartridges are the printer brand's own. Compatible cartridges are brand new, built by another maker to the same fit and sold for less. Remanufactured cartridges are originals that have been cleaned and refilled. Compatible and remanufactured cost less per page, and most homes and offices switch to them once the printer is out of warranty. All three are listed against the same number so you can compare and choose on price.
