Power Boards & Extensions

The right power board comes down to four things: how many outlets you need, whether you want surge protection for electronics, if you'd like USB charging built in, and how you want it switched. We stock four, six, eight and ten-way boards, extension leads from 3 to 20 metres, and standby UPS units to keep gear running through a power cut. Brands include Sansai, Belkin, Jackson, Dynamix and Eaton.

Count everything you plug in at that spot, then add one or two spare outlets for the future. As a guide, a four-way board suits a single desk, six to eight outlets handle a full workstation with a dock and second monitor, and a ten-way board or rack rail is built for AV setups and workbenches.

Joules measure how much surge energy the board can absorb before its protection wears out. A higher number copes with bigger or more frequent spikes. Around 175J is fine for lamps and chargers, 525J to 650J suits computers and printers, and 900J and above is the safer choice for AV gear and anything expensive.

A master switch turns the whole board on or off at once, which is handy for shutting a desk down at the end of the day. Individually switched boards give each outlet its own switch, so you can cut standby power to one item, like a printer, without unplugging anything else.

Yes, if you pick a board with USB ports built in. Many of ours include USB-A and USB-C ports so phones and tablets charge without a separate plug pack. If charging speed matters, check the amp output, since faster boards run 3.4A or 4.5A.

Overload protection is a built-in circuit breaker that cuts power if the total load gets too high, then resets with a push button. It's worth having anywhere someone might plug in a heater, kettle or other high-draw appliance, since it stops the board being overloaded.

Sorting outlets from joules

A few things worth knowing before you pick a board:

• Outlet count: count what you plug in, then leave one or two spare. Four-way suits a desk, six to eight a workstation, ten-way an AV setup or workbench.

• Surge protection: rated in joules. Higher numbers absorb bigger spikes. Lower-rated boards (around 175J) are fine for lamps and chargers, while computers and AV gear are better on 525J and up.

• Overload protection: a built-in circuit breaker cuts power if you draw too much, then resets with a button. Worth having where heaters or appliances get plugged in.

• USB ports: boards with USB-A and USB-C charge phones and tablets without a plug pack. Look at the amp rating if you want fast charging.

• Switches: a master switch kills everything at once. Individually switched boards let you turn off standby power to one item without unplugging it.

How many outlets, and what are you plugging in?

Start with the outlet count. A four-way board handles a typical desk: computer, monitor, lamp and a charger. Move up to six or eight outlets for a full workstation with a dock, speakers and a second screen, and a ten-way board or a horizontal rack rail for AV racks and workbenches where everything lives in one spot. It pays to leave a spare outlet or two so the next thing you add has somewhere to go.

Watch the spacing as well. Plug packs and adapters are bulky and can cover the outlet next door. Several Dynamix and Jackson boards use double-spaced ports so you can fit chunky plugs side by side without losing a socket.

Surge protection and the joule rating

Surge protection guards against voltage spikes from the grid, lightning and switching appliances. It's measured in joules, and a higher number means the board can soak up a bigger or more frequent spike before it wears out. Here is a rough guide to the ratings we carry:

Joule rating Good for
Around 175J Lamps, chargers, low-cost gear
525J to 650J Computers, monitors, printers
900J and up AV gear, gaming setups, anything you'd hate to lose

Overload protection is a separate thing worth having. A built-in circuit breaker trips if the total draw gets too high, which matters where someone might plug in a heater or a kettle. You reset it with a push button rather than replacing a fuse.

USB charging and switch types

Plenty of boards now have USB charging built into the body, with USB-A and USB-C ports so phones, tablets and headphones charge straight off the board. If charging speed matters, check the amp output: faster boards run 3.4A or 4.5A across their ports. For charging only, with no mains outlets, see our phone chargers.

Switching changes how you use the board day to day. A master switch turns the whole board on and off in one go, handy at a desk you shut down each night. Individually switched boards give every outlet its own switch, so you can cut standby power to the printer while leaving the modem on.

Extension leads and backup power

When the wall socket is just out of reach, an extension lead bridges the gap. We stock 240V leads from 3 metres up to a 20 metre heavy-duty run, plus piggy-back cords that pass power through while taking a socket. For sites where outages cause real trouble, a standby UPS such as the Eaton 3S keeps a router or desktop running long enough to save your work and shut down cleanly.
