One tray is a paper pile with edges. Three trays stacked are a system — in, working, out — in the footprint of a single A4 sheet. Front-loading or side-loading decides how the stack behaves, and that's worth getting right before you buy. The rest of the desk kit is in desk and file organisers.

Front-loading trays open on the short front edge, so you can pull paper from any level of a stack without lifting the trays above — the Esselte Nouveau series is the classic example. Side-loading wire trays open along the long edge, suiting landscape paper and desks where the stack sits side-on to you. For stacks of three or more, front-loading wins on practicality.
Usually not well. Each range moulds its own locating corners, so trays from different makers rarely seat square on each other and the stack leans. Build a stack from one range — Nouveau on Nouveau, Enviro on Enviro — and it stays put.
Only if you handle paper bigger than A4 — plans, proofs, posters, large-format printouts. A4 sits fine inside an A3 tray, but A3 folded into an A4 tray creases. The Marbig A3 tray with divider splits one tray into two zones, which covers a mixed A4/A3 workflow in a single level.
Marbig's Enviro trays — in both portrait and landscape formats — and Italplast's greenR and e-tray lines are made from recycled material. They stack and wear like the standard versions, so specifying recycled doesn't change how the desk works.
Three is the working standard: incoming on top, in-progress in the middle, completed at the bottom. Label the front edges and the system explains itself to everyone else in the office. A two-tray in/out stack suits low-paper desks; past four levels, retrieval gets awkward and a sorter is the better tool.

Front-loading trays like the Esselte Nouveau and Marbig Enviro ranges open at the front face, so paper slides in and out even mid-stack. Side-loading wire trays present the paper side-on, which suits landscape documents and looks lighter on the desk. Most trays here are A4, with A3 trays for plans and artwork - including a Marbig A3 tray with divider - and jumbo trays when the paper itself is oversized.

Front-loading or side-loading decides how the stack works

The classic three-tray stack — in at the top, working in the middle, out at the bottom — only functions if the middle tray is reachable. That's the case for front-loaders: the Esselte Nouveau series, in black, smoke and colours, opens at the front face so every level in the stack stays live. Side-loading wire trays trade that for side-on access and an open, lighter look on the desk, and the wire range covers both loading styles. Whichever way you go, keep the stack to one range — moulded corners locate tray on tray within a series, and mixed-brand stacks lean.

Portrait, landscape and the shape of your desk

Marbig's Enviro range comes in both portrait and landscape orientations — the same A4 capacity in two different footprints. Portrait runs deep and narrow, fitting beside a monitor; landscape runs wide and shallow, sliding under a shelf or along the back edge of the desk. It's a small decision that determines whether the stack fights your keyboard for space, and one most tray ranges don't offer.

A4 every day, A3 for what can't fold

Nearly everything that crosses a desk is A4, and most of the range is sized for it. The A3 trays — Esselte's document tray and Marbig's A3 with divider — exist for paper that must stay flat: plans, proofs, artwork. The divider version zones one tray for two paper sizes at once. Jumbo trays go a size beyond that again.

From recycled board to translucent Ice

Materials run wider than the standard black plastic. Marbig Enviro and Italplast's greenR and e-tray lines are recycled; Italplast's clear trays and Durable's Ice range bring a translucent, front-of-office finish; wire mesh is the most rigid and the easiest to keep clean. Trays handle the flat, unfiled paper — once documents go into folders, they stand up in a file sorter instead, and the small loose items disappear into a drawer tidy.
