What is the difference between HP 26A and 26X?

They are the same toner for the same printer; the letter is the yield. The A is standard yield and the X is high yield, holding more toner so it prints more pages before a change. The X costs a little more but usually works out cheaper per page on a busy printer. A few enterprise cartridges use Y for extra-high yield.

How do I find the right HP toner for my printer?

Look for the code on the old cartridge or in the printer's menu, then match it exactly. HP uses a short number like 26A, 201X or 206X, and a longer part code such as CF226A or W2110X. Either one identifies the cartridge, so order by whichever is printed on yours.

Does my HP colour printer need four cartridges?

Yes. A colour LaserJet uses four separate toners, a black plus cyan, magenta and yellow, and you replace only the colour that runs out. Printing mostly black documents empties the black first, so buying the black on its own is normal. A mono LaserJet uses a single black toner.

What is an imaging drum and do I need one?

On several HP LaserJet Pro models the imaging drum is a separate part from the toner. The drum transfers toner to the page and lasts across several toner changes before it wears out. If your prints have gone faint but you only fitted toner recently, a tired drum is usually the cause. Check your model to see whether it uses a combined cartridge or a separate toner and drum.

What is the difference between original, compatible and remanufactured toner?

Original is HP's own cartridge. Compatible is a brand-new third-party toner built to the same fit for less. Remanufactured is an original HP shell that has been cleaned and refilled, which costs less than new and reuses the casing. All three print to the yields shown, so the choice comes down to price and whether you want HP's own.

Find your code, then A, X or Y

HP names its toner with a number and a letter, and the letter is the yield. An HP 26A is the standard cartridge, while the 26X is the same toner that simply holds more, so it prints more pages before you swap it. On a busy printer the X usually works out cheaper per page; on a light one the standard A is plenty. A few enterprise cartridges add a Y for extra-high yield. Every HP toner also carries a longer part code, so an HP 26A reads as CF226A and a newer HP 206X as W2110X.
