HP ink for every printer, original, compatible and remanufactured. Home DeskJet and ENVY take a black and a tri-colour cartridge; OfficeJet Pro uses four separate ones; and Smart Tank refills from bottles. Find your number, pick standard or XL, and order. Match the number printed on the cartridge you are replacing, for example HP 63, 965XL or 67. Each HP cartridge also carries a longer part code such as F6U64AA, and both point to the same one. Most listings name the printers a cartridge fits, so you can search by your DeskJet, OfficeJet or ENVY model instead.
Home DeskJet and ENVY printers take two cartridges, a black and a single tri-colour that holds cyan, magenta and yellow together. OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro printers use four separate cartridges, so you replace only the colour that empties. Check whether your colour ink is one cartridge or three.
Most HP printers take clip-in cartridges. The HP Smart Tank range is different and refills from HP 31 and 32 ink bottles poured into a built-in tank. Check whether your printer is a Smart Tank model before ordering, because bottles and cartridges are not interchangeable.
New HP printers ship with setup cartridges, starters that hold less ink than a full one, so the first replacement lasts much longer. Some printers are also enrolled in HP Instant Ink, a subscription where cartridges arrive automatically. If you are not on that plan, buy a standard or XL cartridge here.
Original is HP's own cartridge. Compatible is a brand-new third-party one built to the same fit, sold for less. Remanufactured is an original HP shell cleaned and refilled. Compatible and remanufactured cost less per page, and all print to the yields shown, so the choice comes down to budget.

Combined or individual, then standard or XL

HP ink comes in two patterns, so the first step is knowing which your printer uses. Home DeskJet and ENVY printers take two cartridges, a black and a single tri-colour, for example HP 63, 65 or 67. OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro machines use four separate cartridges, a black plus cyan, magenta and yellow, like the 965 or 955, so you change only the colour that runs out. The Smart Tank range is different again and refills from ink bottles, not cartridges.

Each HP cartridge has a short number and a longer part code, and both point to the same one, so match the number on the cartridge you are replacing. Most come in standard and XL, and the XL holds more for a small extra cost, which works out cheaper per page. New printers ship with smaller setup cartridges, so a full one lasts noticeably longer.

Two cartridges or four

OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro printers use four separate cartridges, a black plus individual cyan, magenta and yellow, like the 965, 962 and 955, so you replace only the colour that empties rather than the whole set. Each cartridge carries a short number and a longer part code such as F6U64AA, and both name the same one, so match the number printed on the cartridge you are taking out.

Smart Tank uses bottles

The HP Smart Tank range works differently from the rest. Instead of a clip-in cartridge it has a built-in tank you top up from an ink bottle, the HP 31 colours and HP 32 black, and one bottle prints a very long way, which is the point of a tank printer. Bottles and cartridges are not interchangeable, so check whether your HP is a Smart Tank model before you order. Everything else in the DeskJet, OfficeJet and ENVY range takes numbered cartridges.

Setup cartridges and Instant Ink

Two HP quirks catch people out. New printers come with setup cartridges, starters that hold less ink than a full cartridge, so the first one you buy yourself lasts noticeably longer. And many HP printers can be enrolled in HP Instant Ink, a subscription that ships cartridges automatically based on how much you print. If you are on that plan your cartridges arrive in the post; if you are not, the standard and XL cartridges on this page are what you buy.

Standard, XL and your choice of ink

Most HP numbers come in standard and XL. The XL holds more ink, often around twice as much, for a small jump in price, so it works out cheaper per page and is the better buy unless you barely print. On top of size, you choose how the ink is made: original HP, brand-new compatible built to the same fit for less, or remanufactured, an original HP shell cleaned and refilled.
