A folder in a tray stack is always under two other folders. A folder in a sorter stands upright in its own slot, visible and one motion from your hand - which is the whole argument for this category. The folders themselves are in files and folders.

A step file is one open organiser with a rising floor — folders lean together but each sits higher than the one in front, so all the tabs show. A rack has fixed slots that keep each folder fully separate and vertical. Step files suit one person's working set; racks suit shared or project-based filing.
Count your live folders, not your total folders. A 4-slot triangular rack covers a focused workload, 6 to 8 slots handle a busy desk, and anything beyond that is better split across a rack and an archive shelf — a sorter full of dormant folders defeats its purpose.
The wider-slot racks and the vertical mesh organiser take slim binders, but sorters are really built for manilla folders, document wallets and thin files. Heavier binders are more stable on a shelf with bookends.
Trays are for flat, unfiled paper moving through a process. Once documents live in folders, stacking them flat hides the labels and buries the oldest. Upright storage in a sorter keeps every folder visible and removable without disturbing the rest.

Upright beats flat for anything in a folder

Paper you haven't filed yet flows through letter trays. But the moment it goes into a folder, flat stacking turns against you — labels face up where you can't read them, and the folder you want is reliably at the bottom. File sorters store folders the way a library stores books: upright, spine readable, removable one-handed.

Three shapes, one idea

Step files — Marbig's, and Italplast's recycled greenR version — angle a single open bay so each folder sits proud of the one before it. Racks go further and give every folder a wall of its own: triangular metal racks in 4-slot and 8-slot versions, U-shaped 7-slot racks in black and metal, and the Que 6-slot.
