External Hard Drives

An external hard drive is the simplest way to back up files, free up space on a laptop or carry a project between machines. The right one depends on what you're storing and where the drive will live: a plain portable drive for everyday backup, a rugged one for site and travel, a Mac-ready drive for macOS, a game drive for a console, or a password-protected drive for sensitive data. We stock Seagate, WD, LaCie and ADATA from 1TB up to 18TB.

For documents and photos, 1TB or 2TB is usually enough. If you store a lot of video or a full photo library, look at 4TB or 5TB, and go to the large desktop drives for long-term archives. Buying one size up from what you need now saves replacing it sooner.

Portable 2.5 inch drives don't, they run off the USB cable. Only the large desktop drives use a separate power supply. So a portable drive is genuinely plug-and-go.

Yes. Drives are formatted for PC by default but can be reformatted for macOS in a couple of minutes. The WD My Passport for Mac and LaCie drives come Mac-ready and work with Time Machine straight out of the box.

Yes. The Seagate Game Drive is set up for console storage, and most standard USB drives also work for storing and playing games once the console formats them.

Rugged drives like the ADATA HD710 Pro and LaCie Rugged resist dust, water and drops, so they handle being carried around a site, a job or travel. A standard drive is fine on a desk but isn't built for that.

Secure drives like the LaCie Mobile Drive Secure use hardware encryption, so the files are locked until you enter the password. If the drive is lost or stolen, the data can't be read.

Match the drive to the job

Everyday backup: a portable USB drive you plug in and drag files onto. No power brick needed.

Out and about: a rugged, water and shock resistant drive that survives a toolbag or a building site.

Mac: a drive formatted for macOS that works with Time Machine straight away.

Gaming: a game drive that adds console storage so you keep more titles installed.

Sensitive data: a drive with hardware password protection and encryption.

Big archives: a desktop drive with the most capacity for years of photos and video.

How much capacity do you need

Start with what you're storing. A terabyte or two is plenty for documents, photos and the odd video. Step up to 4TB or 5TB if you keep a lot of video or a full photo library, and to the larger desktop drives when you're archiving years of work in one place. It's worth buying a size up from what you need now, so you're not replacing the drive in a year.

Portable or desktop

Most of our drives are 2.5 inch portable units that draw power from the USB cable, so there's nothing else to plug in and they slip into a bag. The very large capacities (like the 18TB Seagate One Touch) are desktop drives that sit by your computer and use a separate power supply. Choose portable if you carry it around, desktop if it stays put and holds an archive.

Everyday, rugged or secure

  • Everyday drives like the Seagate Expansion and WD My Passport are the standard pick for backup at home or in the office.
  • Rugged drives like the ADATA HD710 Pro (dust and water resistant to IP68, shock resistant) and the LaCie Rugged are built for site work, travel and rough handling.
  • Secure drives like the LaCie Mobile Drive Secure add hardware password protection and encryption, so a lost drive doesn't mean lost data.

Mac, PC and gaming

Drives come formatted for PC out of the box and work on Windows straight away. The WD My Passport for Mac and LaCie drives come ready for macOS and Time Machine. Any drive can be reformatted for the other platform, but a Mac-ready drive saves you a step. For consoles, the Seagate Game Drive is set up to add PlayStation or Xbox storage.

USB-A or USB-C

Older drives connect with a standard USB-A plug that fits most computers. Newer drives, including the LaCie and Seagate Rugged models, use USB-C. Both work with USB 3.0 and later for fast transfers, and most ship with the cable you need. If your laptop only has USB-C ports, a USB-C drive saves carrying an adapter.
