Know your roll size? Most EFTPOS terminals take 57 x 38mm and most receipt printers take 80 x 80mm, both in stock here in packs from 5 rolls up to a box of 200. Not sure what you need? The first number is the paper width and the second is the roll diameter, so measure your old roll across the face and you have it.

Pull out your current roll and read the two numbers, or measure it. The first is the paper width in millimetres, which must match your printer, and the second is the roll diameter, which sets how much paper is on the roll. EFTPOS terminals are almost always 57mm wide and most receipt printers are 80mm wide.

Thermal rolls have a heat-sensitive coating and need no ink, which is what EFTPOS terminals and modern receipt printers use. Bond rolls are plain paper for impact printers that print through a ribbon, and they come in 1, 2 or 3-ply so you can get carbon copies. They are not interchangeable, so match the roll to the printer type.

If your staff handle receipts constantly or you are in food service, yes. BPA-free thermal rolls swap the developer in the coating for an alternative, and they print identically on the same machines. The Ambassador BPA-free rolls are a straight replacement for the standard sizes.

Roll sizes and what they fit

  • 57 x 38mm is the standard EFTPOS terminal roll. If you have a card machine, this is almost certainly the one.
  • 57 x 40, 47, 50, 57 and 75mm are the same EFTPOS width with a bigger roll, so you get more paper and change rolls less often on busy terminals.
  • 80 x 80mm is the standard receipt and POS printer roll, used by most cash registers and kitchen receipt printers.
  • 76 x 76mm is bond paper for impact printers that print with a ribbon, sold in 1, 2 and 3-ply for carbon copies.
  • 76 x 48mm and 80 x 140mm suit portable and kiosk printers.

Width has to match your printer slot. A larger diameter only helps if your printer has the room for it, so check the roll bay before you size up.

Thermal or bond, and how to tell

Thermal rolls are coated paper with no ink or ribbon. The printer's heated head darkens the coating, which is how EFTPOS terminals and modern receipt printers work. Quick test: drag a fingernail across the paper and thermal leaves a grey mark. Bond rolls are plain paper for impact printers that strike through a ribbon, and they come in plies, so a 2-ply gives you a customer copy and a counter copy from one print.

BPA-free options

Standard thermal paper uses a developer in the coating, and some of it contains BPA. We also stock BPA-free thermal rolls, including the Ambassador range, for cafes, food handlers and anyone whose staff handle receipts all day and would rather avoid it. They print exactly the same on your existing machine.
