A bulldog clip lives or dies on its jaw width: a small one grips a few sheets, a wide one holds a thick report without springing off. We stock plain metal clips from 32mm up to 142mm, magnetic versions that grip paper and stick to a board at the same time, and colour-coded magnetic paper clips for sorting jobs at a glance. Esselte, Dixon and Plus, all sold in packs.

Go by how much paper you're holding. A 32mm clip suits a few sheets or a folded note, 51mm is the everyday office size for a decent stack, and the 70mm to 142mm clips handle thick reports and bundles of folders. If in doubt, size up, since a clip that's too small tends to spring off.

They work the same way, with a spring-loaded jaw, but a letter clip has a flatter profile that sits neatly in a tray or on a stack of mail. A bulldog clip has a taller body and a stronger grip, which suits thicker bundles. We stock both, including Dixon letter clips in packs.

Match the jaw to the job

Pick by how much paper you're holding and where the clip needs to sit:

Sizing a bulldog clip

The jaw width is the number that matters. A 32mm clip is built for a few sheets, a folded note or a small bundle of receipts. The 51mm is the one most offices reach for, with enough spring to hold a solid stack without marking the page too hard. When you get up to a full report or a wad of folders, step up to the 70mm and 142mm clips, which open wide enough to grip the lot and stay put. Going too small for the job is the usual reason a clip pings off the desk, so it pays to size up rather than down.

Our metal clips come from Esselte and Dixon, sold in packs of twelve or twenty so a busy office or classroom has spares on hand. The letter clip is the same idea in a flatter profile, handy for keeping mail and paperwork together in a tray.

Magnetic clips and colour-coding
