Bubble wrap comes on a roll ready to use, you cut a length and wrap it around the item by hand. DSB air cushion film arrives flat and needs an air cushion machine to inflate it: air pillow film makes loose pillows for filling gaps in a box, and air bubble cushion film makes large bubbles you wrap around the product. Hand rolls suit low volume, the machine films suit a packing line.
Yes. The air pillow and air bubble cushion films are supplied flat and only become cushioning once a DSB air cushion machine inflates them. If you do not run a machine, choose a standard 500mm or 650mm bubble wrap roll instead.
Use 500mm for everyday parcels like mugs, books and small boxed items, where it folds neatly over the box. Choose 650mm when the item is larger than a fist, such as a vase, framed print or small appliance, so you can wrap all the way around in one pass without taping two strips together.
Put the bubbles facing in, against the item. The bubbles are what cushion the product, and keeping them on the inside protects them from being popped against other parcels in transit, while the flat side gives a smooth surface to tape over.
As a rule of thumb, allow two to three layers around any fragile part and enough to pad the corners. A 1.5 metre roll covers the occasional gift or single breakable, while a 5 metre roll suits a steady run of sends. For high volume, the 300 metre DSB machine films work out lower cost per parcel.

Hand rolls or air cushion machine?

The 500mm width suits most everyday parcels, and the wider 650mm wraps bigger items like a vase or framed print in one pass. What to pack it with

Wrap is half the parcel. Seal the seams with packaging tape so the cushioning stays put in transit. For a fragile item, a rigid cardboard box with wrap inside beats a soft satchel; for something light and tough, a padded mailing bag or courier bag keeps the parcel small. Finish with an address label from our labels range.
